Razor 3: Who's Got the Gold? (1974)

After the glories of The Snare, it was unlikely that a further outing for Hanzo would be able to do any better, and this doesn't breach that expectation, but it is a fine film and sits neatly in between the fun but messy first chapter and the terrific second in terms of quality and general entertainment. The screenplay comes from Yasuzo Masumura and has some parallels with The Snare, as well as the expected hi-jinks of a Hanzo film, but the film rings nice little changes on the formula by amping up the character driven humour as well as giving the film a quieter, reflective edge. The film opens with Hanzos assistants scared by a ghost, and typically he decides straight away that he needs to have carnal knowledge of this ghost. It turns out that the ghost is serving as a guard for a stash of stolen coins and from this set-up unfolds a story of theft, corruption and usury, with expected violent and sleazy results. Shintaro Katsu is terrific as expected as Hanzo, coming across effortlessly as a deadly fighter and sexual force of nature, he is equally good in the moments of knowing humour and likable, almost an ordinary gentleman in moments of drama, it is a beautifully rounded performance filled with social conscience and a touching edge of personal feeling. The expected comedy comes off fine as well, his moments with "Snake" Magobei are perhaps the most amusing of the series whilst his interactions with his servants are kookily entertaining as ever. Though neatly laden throughout with nice moments, a fair amount of action and a little sleaze, the film does lose a little from a relatively restrained approach. There are shades of both prior films, the plotting, pace and smarts recall The Snare and when the film aims for sleaze it does very well, with a potently handled and impactful early interrogation sequence. Equally though, director Yoshio Inoue presents potentially sleazy scenes in a more experimental way as per Kenji Misumi's less well handled work in Sword Of Justice, with consequences sometimes very nice, as with a man playing a tune on the koto, with close ups of his fingers plucking at the strings as unbeknownest to him Hanzo ploughs his wife, and sometimes a bit weak, as with an orgy that is reduced to a nudity free psychedelic whirl of limbs in motion that just looks confusing. The nudity and bloodshed is generally downplayed which is a pity, though there is a little of both a stronger approach would have worked better, it is definitely the sort of film where trashy and unrestrained nudity and violence are most appropriate. But even with less in the way of exploitative goods this is still thoroughly entertaining stuff, the predictable moments are wrought with aplomb and there is more than enough intrigue and excitement, even some effective surprises to go around. Its a film for the fans really, playing off the work laid down in the previous instalments and working sweetly if not spectacularly with it. Altogether a near wholly pleasurable if mildly flawed end to a delightful trilogy, the second best of them and well worth a watch for enthusiasts of such things.

Boachi Bushido: Code of the Forgotten Eight (1973)

Pursued by the authorities, rōnin assassin Shiro (Tetsurô Tanba) is taken in by the immoral Bohachi clan, who use the warrior's awesome sword-fighting skills to help them seize control of the local prostitution industry. When no longer of any use, the evil Bohachi leader tries to dispose of Shiro by getting him addicted to opium and caging him up with a syphilitic whore; but even stoned out of his gourd, the assassin proves to be a formidable opponent...

I'm of the opinion that, like cyborgs and dwarfs (and cyborg dwarfs), gratuitous female nudity and gore can make virtually any film more entertaining; director Teruo Ishii clearly agrees, loading Bohachi, a delightfully sleazy Chanbara movie, with countless naked Japanese cuties and very bloody sword-fights, which means that when the screen isn't full of tits (no muff: this being a Japanese film the ladies keep their hands in front of their nether regions at all times), there's severed body-parts flying everywhere instead. Sometimes, Ishii even combines the two, having his naked Bohachi women whipping out weapons and partaking in the violence themselves—something I'm all in favour of.

The name of the game here is clearly 'exploitation excess' meaning that on top of the all the wonderful big-breasted Asian babes and bright crimson blood, viewers can also expect a smidgen of torture, a smattering of lesbianism, and some opium-fuelled sex (with hero Shiro entertaining not one woman, but four!), all realised with hyper-stylised direction that uses strong experimental lighting effects to really add to that cool 70s vibe.

A Woman Called Sada Abe (1975)

Based upon a true story (which is more common through Nagisa Oshimas "In the Realm of Senses"), this well filmed, well acted Japanese movie is as much a contribution to the infamous "pink film" genre, as it is a fascinating tale of the wild and weird ways that sexual obsession leads to. Kaio, as Abe Sada called herself, and her boss Kishi are drawn into an amorous affair and totally forget about the outside world. They stay in a hotel room and day-in, day-out they spent their time with erotic games, exploring all aspects of physical love and gradually going further and further, until... It's not really sado-masochism of the western type, it looks more like erotic rituals, yet for the unprepared viewer some scenes may be quite harsh. This one's neither moralistic nor stuff to turn on voyeurs. The obsession is physically visible, but no doubt is left that the real obsession takes place in the minds of the protagonists. A forgotten gem, interesting, provocative and highly recommendable.

Female Yakuza Tale (1973)

Ocho is accidentally captured by a drug trafficking cartel who use Chinese women to smuggle drugs into Japan by hiding it in their vaginas. She is tortured, and manages to escape, fighting both the male yakuzas and a gang of female thieves.

Reiko Ike returns as skilled gambler & swordswoman Ochô Inoshika in this unrelated sequel to Norifumi Suzuki's Sex and Fury directed by Ero-gro master Teruo Ishii (Joys of Torture series, Blind Woman's Curse).

When she is framed as the "Crotch-Gouge'' killer by three men, Ocho sets out to discover their identities and in turn becomes embroiled in a convoluted plot involving Yakuza-related drug smuggling between Japan and China. She soon learns the men have mistaken her for one of their dope-addicted prostitutes they've been using as drug mules to import the Heroin.

Angel Guts: Red Vertigo (1988)

For Nami, life is going pretty good. Her job as a nurse is very fulfilling, and her boyfriend Kenji is doing well as a photographer of nude women. Life for Muraki isn't so hot. Implicated in an embezzlement scandal, he has been fired from his job, and is now on the run from the investors who lost money to him. He decides to leave Tokyo and start a new life. When Nami is nearly raped by patients at the hospital, she runs off to find solace with Kenji. When she discovers Kenji is doing more than photography with his models, she takes off again, only to be hit by Muraki's car. At first he tries to help her, then he decides to take advantage of the unconscious woman. For these two people, their accidental meeting will mark the start of a bizarre relationship that will either bring them to the heights of ecstasy, or plunge them deeper into despair.

There's lots of sensual sleaze on tap, especially in the riveting first third which is chock full of depraved sex. It gets a bit mellower after that but Ishii gives us a handful of good strong sex scenes to help appease the insatiable appetites of violent pink fanatics such as myself. Every frame is beautifully lensed and Ishii really shows his love and enthusiasm for the material.

Angel Guts: Nami (1979)

Nami is a reporter for "The Woman", a the second largest women's magazine in Japan. She is working on a series of articles profiling rape victims and what happens to them after the event. While her articles are very popular with the public, her interview subjects are not always as grateful. As far as Nami is concerned, her articles are going to help women, even though she shows no real sympathy to the victims. While she is doing research on one of her subjects, Nami runs into Muraki, a reporter for an underground magazine. He warns her that if she goes in too deep, she may find herself too far gone. She thinks he is trying to scoop her story, and initially blows him off. However, as she looks into his past, she discovers a dark truth about Muraki. Can someone who constantly exposed to such vile and deprave acts not be affected by what they see? Can one who has been raped ever truly find happienss? Nami is about to find out.

"Angel Guts:Nami" is a third installment in Nikkatsu Studio's roman porno series. This time a young female reporter Nami tracks down women who have been savagely raped in the past. Unfortunately for her, she interviews a nurse who had been a victim of rape. Raping Nami and then brutally sodomizing her, the nurse has in fact shown Nami what she was looking for. Once again, like the victim she has interviewed, Nami herself becomes suicidal, unbalanced and feeling very dirty. "Angel Guts: Nami" is a pretty nasty Japanese rape film. It's a well-directed and superbly lit assault on viewer's senses. The rape scenes are rather brutal and will certainly leave some viewers disturbed, but anyone who likes Japanese pink movies won't be disappointed. The acting is quite good with Eri Kanuma giving excellent performance as Nami. So if you enjoyed other installments of controversial "Angel Guts" series you can't go wrong with "Nami".

The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai (2003)

The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai is a Pink Film (a Japanese softcore pornography genre). Sachiko Hanai (Emi Kuroda) is a call girl. One day she is caught up in a gunfight and is shot in the forehead. Instead of killing her, the bullet in her head gives her psychic powers. She also accidentally comes into possession of a cylinder containing George W. Bush's finger, whose fingerprint is designed to launch a nuclear missile, and international spies are soon chasing her.

It's hard to know just what to make of the Japanese film, "The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai." Is it a parody of a softcore porn flick or just a softcore porn flick itself? I tend to think it's the former, since, along with its myriad (and fairly graphic) simulated sex scenes, the film is also a wildly funny, tongue-in-cheek absurdist farce, replete with social criticism and political commentary for the deeper thinkers in the crowd. Not all of it works equally well, but you at least gotta' give 'em props for trying.

Sachiko Hanai is an attractive young tutor with what a polite person might describe as an "active interest in sexual expression." Despite her job as a teacher, Sachiko is no great shakes in the brains department, until, that is, she is accidentally shot in the forehead by a secret agent from North Korea. Due to the bullet's strategic placement in the cerebral cortex, Sachiko suddenly becomes a super genius, able to comprehend French philosophy, complex laws of physics and arcane mathematical equations with no trouble whatsoever. She also develops a paranormal ability to peer into the unseen mysteries of the universe and to foretell future events. Her condition, however, does not curtail her appetite for sex; in fact, if anything, her newfound intelligence seems only to exacerbate it.

Indeed, much of the fun of "Sachiko Hanai" derives from the incongruous juxtaposition of raw sexuality with intellectual pretentiousness. There's something immensely funny about watching people make passionate love while debating the finer points of dialectical materialism and String Theory or using Susan Sontag and Noam Chomsky as aphrodisiacs. The actors help to pull it off by playing their scenes with a straight-faced, deadpan seriousness that enhances the humor.

The plot gets even weirder when Sachiko finds herself in possession of the cloned, self-animated finger of George W. Bush and the machine that would allow it to unleash an arsenal of deadly nuclear weapons on an unsuspecting world. How's that for a storyline?

I frankly have no idea what this spy thriller cum sex comedy is really all about, but I had a great deal of fun watching it just the same.

Path of the Beast (1980)

17 year old Saki lives in a run-down s hack with mom who survives by pushing a food cart from dawn to dusk. Saki has dropped out of school, and when she's not helping her mother sell noodles in the streets, she's playing flesh-games with boyfriend Sotoo. In her spare time, the girl also entertains a truck driver named Ataru. She believes her promiscuity is a trait inherited from mom. Determined to improve her lot in life (she doesn't want to grow up like her mother), Saki decides to stop seeing the two guys.

Erotic Diary of an Office Lady (1977)

Generally less explicit than films of this genre made outside of Japan owing to restrictions at the time, this is a pink (x rated) film about Asami (the pretty Asami Ogawa) who works in an office and is having an sexual relationship with her boss. She lives with her father, who is looking for her to get married. She doesn't seem averse to the idea and meets someone. The reason this film is watchable is that the plot is pretty good. Also, Asami Ogawa is good in her role. Of course, some of this film is fairly explicit, and a few of the sex scenes are more violent than sensual, but the production values are good and the direction, by legendary pink film director Masaru Konuma, is spot on. Of course, this is not for everyone, but if your tastes gravitate to these films, you can certainly do a lot worse. The fact that it has a good lead character makes it stronger and watchable.
